DisneyRedDisney’s Studio Unit posted a third quarter loss of $12 Million as compared to a profit of $97 Million during the previous operating year. Disney’s Studio Unit contains Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment division which is responsible for DVD sales and rentals.

Disney CEO Iger said “People are not looking to build [DVD] libraries as much as they once did,” Iger said.

When asked about the recent deal made between Sony studios and Redbox he stated that they had dealt with rental kiosks including Redbox and Blockbuster Express through a third-party years ago. He characterized kiosks as a small part of a sellthrough dominated business. While $1 per day kiosks are convenient and value oriented, Iger said Disney would continue to focus on movies consumers prefer to own rather than rent.

“If you want to watch a Pixar film or you want your kids to watch it 50 times or a Disney film, then owning it is a lot more convenient and more valuable than renting it,” he said.

I have to agree with Iger, my family rents a considerable number of movies. But those movies are typically the ones that I want to see. Those movies that we watch over and over again might start out as rentals but they quickly become purchases. Even with all the rentals I do I still have shelves overcome with DVD’s that we have purchased and put into our library.

What makes you want to purchase a movie versus renting it? Do you do like me and rent the movie first and then decide you would like to own it?
